Oh Canada

The nation of my birth. The nation that I love and have an American sized pride in.

Today she celebrates 145 years since her birth and she stands as grand, and as stately as ever. Her inception was based on Psalm 72:8 “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.”

I have just listened to our national anthem being sung in my church in honor of this momentous day and it never fails to move me to tears.  Emotion closes my throat, and brings tears to my eyes.

She speaks to my heart. She takes my breathe away with her vistas. From coast to coast she has an untamed beauty that calls to me.

She defends. She protects. She can be fierce despite her reputation for politeness.

She is the reason I have the family I have.  She fought for freedom and has freed countries from oppression, the Netherlands being one of them.  If it were not for Canada my grandparents, and possibly my parents would not have survived Hitler’s regime and life would look very, very different.

This nation opened her arms to my grandparents and their children. Allowed them to make a new start. Allowed them to partake of her table. Welcomed them to a new home.

I love you. I honor you. I stand in pride, and without apology, as a Canadian. Strong and free.

And with one hand over my heart, and my eyes on your flag I proudly sing,

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North, strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free !
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
