There’s been a movement that encourages you to choose one word to stand as a banner over your year. A focal point of sorts.
Last year my word was LEAN. I heard God say, “Lean not on your own understanding. Lean on me when you’re tired and overwhelmed. Lean into me as close friends and lovers do to tell of secrets and love.”
This year my one word is LISTEN. The words that keep ringing over and over again in my head are one Jesus spoke often after the telling of a story or parable. “He who ears to hear, let him hear.”
What does that mean for me? To listen means to pay attention to, to give heed to, to do more that just hear. To be honest, the word makes me a wee bit nervous. I makes me wonder what this year will bring that I will have to pay close attention to what I’m hearing, to what I’m listening to. Whatever it is though, I know that my God has prepared the way already, has prepared me, and He will be with me through out it.
“No eye has seen, no ear has heard,
and no mind has imagined
what God has prepared
for those who love him.” I Cor 2:9
Listen. Listen well. That is my challenge for today, for tomorrow, and for the year. It is too easy to just let things go, and not pay attention. I know, I’ve done it. Zoned out completely. The challenge is to be absolutely present in the moment, to not only hear what God is saying, but also what those around me are saying.
It feels big; challenging. Who knows where it will lead? That’s the adventure, my friends.
What is your one word for this year? Does it challenge you? Exhilarate you? Scare you? My friends I would for you to share and to join me on this journey through a brand new year.
