Tempests. Storms. Crises.

Call them what you will, but they come as surely as the sun rises every morning.

Yesterday we were back to normal. Kids off to school, Parents back at work. We were back in full swing and wouldn’t you know it, along came a teenager.

My youngest seems to be making up for lost time as far as the whole teenage attitude thing is concerned. Crisis! “Mom I missed the bus! It was an accident, really!”  This after being told that she couldn’t go to a friend’s house. The way the whole thing ended up playing out, with her staying overnight at said friend’s place (long story), left me feeling  manipulated & a wee bit sideways with my youngest child.

We will be discussing this when I get home today. Hopefully with little to no drama (ahem…hope springs eternal).

I got to thinking about tempests. The dictionary defines a tempest as furious agitation, commotion, or tumult; an uproar. It can be something that can cause quite the disruption and can derail the best of us.

Then, the word caught my eye and it seemed to look like the words temporary and pest got smooshed together. Temporary Pest. Hmmmmm.

Maybe if we look at the crisis of the day as a temporary pest, we wouldn’t be derailed so fast. We could, maybe, handle it better, or can give it up easier. We can swat at it and keep moving forward, keeping our focus on what is important.

Therefore, my brethren, those things that are true, those that are honorable, those that are righteous, those things that are pure, those things that are precious, those things that are praiseworthy, deeds of glory and of praise, meditate on these things.  Philippians 4:8 (Aramaic Bible in Plain English)

My friends, it is my desire to be able to look past those things that would distract me, and to instead, focus on what will move me forward. Forward into those things that God has for me to do, to experience, and to grow in.

I pray that you too will focus on all that is good and honorable, and not get distracted by the tempests of life. The tempests will come and go but the Lord God will always be there with open arms, ready to help, ready to hold, ready to love.
