This past month has been crazy. Between overtime and all the regular goings on in my home there hasn’t been much time for anything. I think my average time for being home for the evening hasn’t been earlier than 930 pm almost every single night. That being said, I seem to have found the time to squeeze in a few new things.
Here are this month’s Works In Progress (WIP):
I have always struggled with finding the time to get a daily reading of the bible in. Trying to focus on the written word first thing in the morning is difficult, and finding the time during the day proved challenging; until now.
I have discovered a wonderful thing called the Daily Audio Bible, hosted and produced by Brian Hardin. Here he reads portions from both the Old and the New Testament every day, records it and puts it out there for people to listen to. For me, that time is on my commute to work. There’s scripture, a small devotional perhaps fitted in and amongst the reading, as well as prayer. And, it comes with an App for my iPhone. Perfect! It’s a win/win for me, as I get in my word for the day as well as having something to listen to other than some of the drivel that gets played on the radio.
This daily audio listening has given me a bit of an idea. I’m going to let it sit for now but will pray on what form it’ll take or how I’ll implement it.
I have just finished my first theological book as part of the Transit Lounge, a monthly book club hosted by Kelly Nikondeha. It was an interesting read so when the new book, The Politics of Jesus by Yoder, was announced, I figured ‘what the heck’ and bought the book. Let me tell you, this one is a completely different animal than the first and I have a feeling that it’s going to be a bit of a tough slog for me to get through. I’m not giving up on it, just going to have to take it in small bite sized pieces as the wording is very academic and I am so not. The fact that I end up reading it after 8 or 9 pm doesn’t help matters either, but it’ll get tackled.
I have also discovered the joy of the audio book. My drive home from work now finds me listening to ‘A Year of Biblical Womanhood’ by Rachel Held Evans. In it you will find all that is Rachel; the theology, the background, the scripture, the social justice; but it also contains copious amounts of humor. Many a commute has found me laughing out loud in my car while cruising down the highway. This comedic relief has made my day’s end feeling less crazy and has saved my sanity (and my children’s lives) on a few occasions.
As I mentioned before I have picked up my crochet hook again and am in the process of making a few baby blankets for people that I know are expecting babies. I have also, ambitiously, picked out a pattern and yarn for an afghan for one of my daughters and an afghan pattern to make for my son (no yarn yet for that one).
I tend to pick it up at work for a few minutes here and there, especially when my eyes need a break from staring at dual computer screens and spreadsheets. I find it relaxing and I get a mini holiday out of it when I get to pick it up.
This year we, as a church, were challenged by our pastor to expand our circle of influence by 3 people. This terrified me. I am by nature an introvert and am somewhat insecure in myself. The notion of deliberately ‘chasing’ someone and adding them to my already harried schedule seemed crazy.
The more I thought about it though, I realized that for me that could take the form of being more deliberate in those relationships that I already had, but who were more peripheral. I’m not sure if that is what he meant, but that is the approach that I’m taking; to be more deliberate in relationship.
Pray for me here, as this does scare me somewhat. I feel like I’m inviting myself into people’s lives without their permission and it’s very uncomfortable for me. I have taken a few baby steps to this end, and they have gone well, but I am still second guessing myself.
These are the things that I have on my plate in the coming month(s).
My friends what’s going on in your world?
What are you WIP’s? Do you have any?
How do you fit things into your schedule?
